Agoda’s latest accommodation search data shows increased spiritual tourism across India, with cities like Allahabad, Ayodhya, and Varanasi climbing rankings in early 2025.
Agoda’s new accommodation search rankings for the first quarter of 2025 reflect a shift toward spiritual and culturally prominent destinations across India. The digital travel platform reports notable growth in search volumes for cities traditionally associated with pilgrimage and cultural heritage.
Allahabad has seen one of the most dramatic rises, emerging from outside Agoda’s top 50 in early 2024 to rank 11th for domestic travellers and 15th for inbound visitors during January, February, and March this year. This increase coincides with the return of the Mahakumbh Mela, held after a 12-year gap, sparking a 233-year-on-year rise in domestic accommodation searches for the city.
The pattern extends beyond Allahabad. Among domestic travellers, Ayodhya moved up 11 spots to #25 while Rishikesh, Manali, and Vrindavan each climbed between 8 and 9 places. Inbound interest mirrored the trend, with Varanasi entering the top 10 at #6 and Amritsar, Agra, and Coimbatore also registering significant jumps.
Gaurav Malik, Country Director for India Subcontinent at Agoda, commented: “This interest in India’s spiritual destinations indicates a growing trend in how people travel, with more travellers looking for cultural connection and personal meaning. Thanks to the great value deals and ever-expanding offerings of holiday accommodations on Agoda, we are well-positioned to cater to the evolving needs of travellers.”
The data underscores a broader shift as both Indian and international travellers show an increasing preference for destinations where spiritual exploration meets cultural immersion.
