Bhutan Tourism-Above 2 Lakh Visitors In 2025, A 44% Growth

The Department of Tourism under Bhutan's Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment has launched Tashlel Melong 2025, an annual tourism snapshot to assess, reflect, reinvent, and reimagine the sector's progress. The report records a 44.33% rise in tourist arrivals and USD 43.31 million in Sustainable Development Fee revenue, positioning Bhutan as a leading performer in global tourism revenue post-pandemic.

The Department of Tourism, Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Employment, Bhutan has launched Tashel Melong 2025, an annual tourism snapshot designed to assess, reflect, reinvent and reimagine Bhutan's tourism journey. The publication highlights key developments, data, and initiatives aimed at strengthening the country's position as a high-value regenerative tourism destination. With Tashel meaning tourism and Melong meaning mirror, the publication serves as a mirror of the sector's performance, enabling policymakers, industry stakeholders, and partners to evaluate achievements, address challenges, and plan future interventions. It supports evidence-based decision-making aligned with Bhutan's long-term development frameworks, including the 21st Century Economic Roadmap, the Bhutan Integrated Tourism Masterplan 2025-2034, and the Industrial Development Roadmap. These strategies collectively position tourism as a key economic pillar, aiming for a 10-15 per cent contribution to national GDP by 2050, in harmony with the principles of Gross National Happiness.

As per the snapshot, Bhutan recorded 209,376 tourists in 2025, reflecting a 44.33 per cent year-on-year increase. Visitors from countries other than India accounted for about 40 per cent of arrivals, up from 27 per cent in 2019. Globally, most countries saw international arrival growth of 4 per cent to 12 per cent, making Bhutan's 2025 growth among the world's highest. Sustainable Development Fee collections reach USD 43.31 million, marking a 49.1 per cent increase from 2024.

The report also showcases policy and marketing initiatives undertaken to enhance the country's tourism ecosystem, including the strengthening of digital platforms such as the Tourist Registration System, Tashel ZoomDu, the Tourism Ideation Forum Monthly Tourism Bulletin of Bhutan, and the Tourism Services Portal. These platforms have improved collaboration, coordination and industry engagement.

Highlighting sustained progress in product development, marketing, and professional capacity building. Tashel Melong 2025 documents Bhutan's shift toward regionally balanced, year-round, regenerative tourism. It reflects the nation's ongoing commitment to ensuring that tourism growth delivers lasting benefits to communities, culture, and the environment while maintaining the integrity of Bhutan's high-value, low-volume tourism model.

"Tashel Melong is intended to be both a mirror and a compass for Bhutan's tourism sector, and it is a reflection of the hard work of the tourism industry," said the Director of the Department of Tourism. "It allows us to assess our collective efforts and reflect on what has worked and reimagine how we move forward together. The 2025 snapshot shows strong recovery and ensuring diversification while reaffirming our commitment to evidence-based regenerative tourism that delivers long-term value for communities, the economy, our cultural and natural heritage and Bhutan."
