Germany has introduced a new visa-free airport transit policy that will make it easier for Indian passport holders to travel to and from the United Kingdom and other global destinations via German airports such as Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin.
According to the new regulation, Indian nationals do not require a Schengen airport transit visa if they are in transit from Germany to the UK or other countries, provided they remain in the international transit area and board their connecting flight within 24 hours. This new development was announced during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's official visit to India in early January 2026.
This development makes travel connections for passengers on airlines like Lufthansa and Air India much simpler, as there is no longer a requirement for additional visa documentation when transiting between India and the UK. This move is likely to enhance travel convenience and further improve air connectivity between the two regions.
The move is part of wider efforts by the German government to promote global mobility and travel partnerships, and it is expected to make German airports more appealing as transit destinations for Indian carriers travelling to Europe, North America, and other destinations.
Officials note that while Indian passengers currently require proper documentation to enter countries like the UK, the visa-free transit rule will reduce barriers to layovers through Germany and streamline international flight planning for many travellers.
