Kibbutz Neot Semadar, a small ecological community in Israel’s southern Arava Desert, has been named one of the world’s “Best Tourism Villages” for 2025 by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). The award recognises the village’s strong commitment to sustainable tourism, cultural preservation and innovative community-led development.
Founded in 1989 and home to approximately 250 residents, including families, artists, and international volunteers, Neot Semadar is distinguished by its eco-living model. The community features desert-adapted architecture, an onsite art centre built over 15 years by residents, a boutique organic winery, eco-lodge accommodations and a range of craft workshops and desert experiences.
Israel’s Tourism Minister congratulated the community, saying it “represents the best of the Israeli spirit – combining innovation, sustainability and community.” The regional council head described the recognition as a proud moment for the entire Southern Arava region. Neot Semadar was selected from among over 270 villages across 65 countries.
The designation is expected to raise the profile of Neot Semadar globally and drive interest in desert and eco-tourism within Israel. It underscores the growing value of rural, experience-rich destinations in the global travel market.
