The Maldives is strengthening its tourism partnership with India by expanding flight services to attract more Indian travellers. Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, plans to increase connectivity from Indian cities with a target of welcoming nearly two lakh Indian tourists in the coming period.
Currently operating five weekly flights from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, the airline is exploring additional routes, particularly from southern India, to improve accessibility. The move comes as the Maldives renews tourism promotion efforts in India following earlier diplomatic tensions, emphasising strong trade and travel ties between the two countries.
Officials highlighted that India remains one of the Maldives’ most important tourism markets, with over 1.3 lakh Indian visitors recorded last year and a large Indian expatriate community residing in the island nation.
Alongside luxury resorts, the Maldives is also promoting affordable guesthouse tourism, offering travellers budget-friendly stay options across more than 900 local properties. The airline is collaborating with tour operators and government stakeholders to boost tourism flows in both directions, encouraging Maldivian travellers to explore India as well.
