NEW DELHI — Turkiye has achieved a major cultural milestone with the inscription of Antep İşi embroidery on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The announcement was made at the 20th Session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in New Delhi from December 8 to 13, 2025.
Antep İşi is a centuries-old needlework tradition from the city of Gaziantep, in southern Turkiye, known for its intricate patterns created by pulling and cutting threads on fabric. The craft has been passed down through generations and is traditionally practised by women, playing an important social and economic role in the community by supporting household incomes and preserving cultural skills.
The nomination was prepared by the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality in collaboration with Turkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. UNESCO praised the entry for its strong community involvement and clear plans to protect the living cultural tradition.
With this addition, Turkiye’s total number of elements on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage lists has reached 32, including several multinational files developed in cooperation with other countries. Gaziantep, a city with a history dating back over 12,000 years and already recognised as a UNESCO Creative City, continues to promote cultural heritage as a key part of its identity.
Mayor Fatma Sahin of Gaziantep said the recognition underscores the cultural and personal value of Antep İşi embroidery, noting its importance in tradition and community life. A special promotional event in New Delhi introduced the craft, along with Gaziantep’s cultural and culinary heritage to international diplomats and stakeholders.
The inscription reflects UNESCO’s wider efforts to protect living cultural traditions. These traditions help connect communities, support sustainable development, and promote cultural diversity around the world.
