Dubai Creek Restoration Initiative To Avert Potential Flooding.

Published on : 27-02-2024

Dubai Creek Restoration Bills To Dh112 Million

The proposed renovation will be carried out in two distinct stages, with the first stage restoring a 2.1-kilometre stretch along the Deira side.

A new project will restore and reconstruct the historic Dubai Creek walls, which have faced numerous obstacles for over 50 years. It will avoid flooding during severe weather and reduce interruptions to commercial traffic.

The Dh112 million project, initiated by Dubai Municipality, is scheduled to be executed in two distinct phases. In the first phase, a 2.1-kilometer segment along the Deira side of Dubai Creek will be restored. The site will be partitioned into several sections to ensure continuous traffic, with each segment featuring a sequential pattern. The second phase on the Bur Dubai side will traverse 2.3 kilometres.

Along the Creek, 200 anchors will be installed as part of the project to guarantee the security of navigation services and facilities.

Artery of Dubai

Serving as a vital conduit through the centre of Dubai, the Dubai Creek signifies the city's expansion while facilitating the annual passage of more than 13,000 vessels.

"The project is set to improve security and safety measures for maritime traffic and commercial operations within Dubai Creek," said Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality."[The Creek] plays a key role in fostering the economic and social prosperity of the Emirate. Additionally, the Creek further supports commercial dealings with neighbouring markets in the region."

Additionally, he declared that the Dubai Municipality is dedicated to overhauling the infrastructure and facilities along Dubai's coastline. The objective is to strengthen Dubai's standing as a prominent international tourism centre and enhance its economic and business affluence.

"We have implemented several measures to mitigate the threats posed by climate instability and rising sea levels, closely monitoring changes on both sides of the creek," he added. "Furthermore, we have conducted technical studies to devise construction designs that can enhance the efficiency of the marine docks on both banks. These designs adhere to the highest global standards, ensuring the preservation of the supporting walls' stability and safeguarding against increased flooding during seasonal weather conditions."

Comprehensive work

The restoration of the 2.1-kilometre Deira pier is encompassed in the fourteen-month schedule of the project. This entails replacing and repairing compromised segments of the concrete wall, which extend to a depth of 8 meters and attain an elevation of 3 meters.

These enhancements will guarantee the secure berthing of vessels in the vicinity. Dubai Creek holds significant historical importance as it served as the starting point for Dubai's commercial engagements with the rest of the world more than a century ago.

Regardless of the considerable urbanization observed in the Emirate, the Creek sustains its historical, commercial, and economic significance, functioning as a prominent tourist destination for local inhabitants, visitors, and tourists.
