The United Kingdom is set to complete a major digital transformation of its borders, announcing that the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme will be fully and strictly enforced for travellers from 85 visa-exempt countries starting February 25, 2026.
The system was first used in a staggered rollout starting in October 2023 and this action ends the grace period. Visitors who previously entered the country without a visa such as nationals of the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and every country in the European Union will legally need to receive digital permission prior to their trip as of the enforcement date.
No Permission, No Travel: The New Mandate
The ETA is a digital travel requirement similar to the ESTA in the US and the upcoming ETIAS in the EU. Its primary function is to modernize the UK’s immigration process and significantly enhance border security by conducting comprehensive pre-travel screening on all short-stay visitors.
Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp, stated that the ETA gives authorities "greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country" and provides a clearer picture of immigration flows.
The key operational change is that airlines, ferry operators, and other carriers will be legally obligated to verify a passenger's ETA status before allowing them to board. Without a valid ETA or a pre-existing eVisa/UK immigration status, travellers will be refused boarding.
Application Details and Advice for Travellers
The UK government has stressed that the ETA application process is designed to be quick and user-friendly:
- Cost and Validity:The ETA fee is set at £16. Once approved, it is valid for two years (or until the linked passport expires, whichever is sooner) and allows for multiple short visits to the UK.
- How to Apply:Applications can be submitted easily via the official UK ETA mobile app or the dedicated section on the UK website. The process requires travellers to provide biographic, biometric (a photo of their face), and contact details, along with answering a short set of suitability questions.
- Processing Time:While most applications are processed automatically within minutes, travellers are strongly advised to apply at least three working days in advance to account for the small number of cases that require additional manual review.
Exemptions and Crucial Warning for Dual Citizens
While the ETA is a new universal requirement for non-visa nationals, certain groups remain exempt:
- British and Irish citizensare fully exempt from the requirement.
- Individuals who already hold a valid UK visaor have a legal right to live, work, or study in the UK (such as with Settled or Pre-Settled Status) do not need an ETA.
Crucial Warning for Dual Citizens:
The Home Office has issued a specific caution for dual British citizens. As carriers will be checking for valid permission from February 2026, dual nationals must ensure they travel with a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement to avoid being denied boarding under the assumption that they require an ETA.
The compulsory digital clearance has let the UK officially align its border policies with key international partners, including the US (ESTA) and Canada (eTA), completing a significant step in its strategy to deliver a fully digital border.
