Oura Cathedral, officially known as Oura Church or The Basilica of Oura (or Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral), is a significant Roman Catholic church located in Nagasaki, Japan. Built in 1864, it is the oldest Christian church in Japan and holds great historical and cultural importance as a symbol of the country's Christian heritage.
The cathedral is an example of Gothic Revival architecture, with its stained-glass windows, wooden beams, and pointed arches, creating a striking contrast to the traditional Japanese architectural styles. The design was influenced by Western Christianity and was constructed during the period when Japan had recently reopened to the outside world after more than two centuries of isolation under the Edo period. This period saw the reintroduction of Christianity into Japan, which had been banned for many years.
Oura Cathedral is especially significant for its connection to the Hidden Christians (Kakure Kirishitan). After Christianity was outlawed in Japan in the early 17th century, many Japanese Christians practiced their faith in secret for over 250 years. When Christianity was legalized again in the 19th century, Oura Cathedral became a place of reunion for these hidden Christians, symbolizing the revival of Christianity in Japan. The church was built by French missionaries, and the first foreign missionary to enter Japan after the country's isolation, Jean-Baptiste Pallegoix, played a key role in its construction.
In 2018, Oura Cathedral was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing it as part of the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region, which includes several other locations that were integral to the history of Christianity in Japan.
Today, Oura Cathedral stands as a place of worship and tourist attraction, where visitors can learn about the remarkable story of Christianity in Japan, view its impressive architectural features, and reflect on the peaceful, rich history of the area. It remains one of the most important religious and historical landmarks in Nagasaki.
