Musical boxes, emblematic of European culture, held significant prominence during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Historical records reveal that Singapore played a pivotal role in the evolution and proliferation of musical boxes in Southeast Asia during this period.
As Singapore’s first musical box museum, our mission is to educate the public about the rich historical tapestry of musical boxes, tracing their journey from their heyday to their eventual decline, and detailing how they found their way to Singapore in the 19th century.
Beyond serving as an exhibition space, our museum aspires to be a vital repository for academic research, education, and the preservation of these remarkable artifacts for future generations.
The museum is housed in Chong Wen Ge, a compound that, along with Thian Hock Keng Temple, was honored with the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2001.
Our collection boasts over 40 antique musical boxes, including the notable “Singanam,” a product of one of the earliest collaborations between Britain and Singapore.
Visitors can embark on detailed tours led by our knowledgeable in-house curators and research staff, who provide in-depth insights into the fascinating history and significance of these musical treasures.
