Authorities and airlines say that harsh winter weather in northern Finland has left thousands of tourists stuck, with flights being cancelled and transit services being hindered by thick snow and intense cold.
Arctic conditions, with temperatures plummeting to well below freezing levels, have forced airlines to cancel or delay flights at major airports in the region, including those that serve popular winter holiday destinations such as Rovaniemi, Kittilä, and Ivalo. Many travellers had planned trips to see the Northern Lights, enjoy winter activities and visit Santa Claus Village.
Tourists arriving in the region found themselves unable to board scheduled flights, with some reports of cancellations or long-haul delays lasting for more than a day. Local hotels and guesthouses experienced high occupancy as many travellers were forced to extend their stays unexpectedly.
In addition to offering support services at the airport, like assistance with lodging and meal vouchers, airport officials and airlines made every effort to reschedule travellers on other flights whenever feasible. However, it was challenging to restore regular operations due to snow-covered runways and unfavourable weather.
The authorities in Finnish Lapland advised tourists to monitor weather forecasts and transportation schedules and exercise patience while efforts were being made to clear runways and resume operations. The emergency services also increased support to help tourists in need of shelter or medical assistance in the remote regions.
The extreme cold weather event brings to light the risks associated with travelling during the winter season in the Arctic regions, even for seasoned tourists. Although the interruption has occurred, authorities have stated that the area is a unique winter destination and are working to make sure that visitors can finish their trip when the weather improves.
