For the first time since the late 1970s, Japan has announced plans to raise the cost of international tourists' visa applications. The price is currently among the lowest in the world, at ¥3,000 (about US $20) for single-entry visas and ¥6,000 (around US $40) for multiple-entry visas.
With almost 20 million tourists visiting in the first half of 2025 alone, the expected increase coincides with a record-breaking increase in inbound travel. The government claims that additional fees are required to better match visa rates in other developed economies and offset growing administrative and security expenses.
Reports indicate that the changes may take effect in the upcoming fiscal year and may include upfront charge collection at the time of application. At the same time, the precise new fees and implementation date are still being reviewed. Authorities are also considering raising exit taxes and increasing screening fees and visa payments.
The fee increase is not intended to deter travel, officials stress. It is a component of a larger strategy to preserve Japan's allure, promote eco-friendly travel, upgrade infrastructure, and improve visitor experiences.
