A significant increase in Indian visitors visiting France has coincided with the country's growing acceptance of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). According to Lyra Network chairman Christophe Mariette, the launch of UPI at central French tourist locations, including the Eiffel Tower, helped spur a 40 per cent increase in arrivals from India.
Mariette observed that paying in their native currency using a method they are accustomed to not only improves convenience but also boosts Indian tourists' sense of security when travelling. Transparency and familiarity are provided by the option to view spending in rupees and have the same amount deducted directly.
France became the first European country to roll out UPI-based payments for Indian tourists, with retail and tourist merchants enabled through a collaboration between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Lyra. Moving forward, UPI payments are set to expand into other French and European retail destinations, making the country even more accessible and appealing to Indian travellers.
