Lucknow is developing India’s first urban night safari at the Kukrail Forest Area with the aim to offer a unique after-dark wildlife experience within the city. The project is inspired by the Singapore Night Safari model and is part of efforts to promote eco-tourism and nature engagement in Uttar Pradesh’s capital.
The night safari will allow visitors to observe nocturnal animals and explore wildlife habitats after sunset — something rarely available in urban settings. Officials say the initiative will be a new attraction for families, students and nature lovers who want closer interaction with wildlife and nature without travelling far from the city.
Alongside the safari, the Uttar Pradesh Eco Tourism Board (UPETB) is upgrading facilities at nearby crocodile, gharial and turtle sanctuaries to make them more visitor-friendly. These upgrades include bamboo round huts, nature walk trails, a children’s park, open gym and a cafeteria, all designed to improve the experience without harming the environment.
Officials are also building parking, toilets and basic infrastructure to ensure convenience for guests. They say that construction work has already started and many of the new amenities could be open to visitors in the early months of the coming year, ahead of the peak tourist season.
The project is developed with a focus on eco-friendly design and environmental conservation — aims to create a pleasant and educational wildlife experience while generating revenue and local employment opportunities. Authorities believe the night safari will put Lucknow on the map for urban wildlife tourism, blending recreation with conservation awareness.
The Kukrail Night Safari is expected to attract both residents and tourists seeking a different kind of wildlife adventure, right within the outskirts of the city.
