Singapore has introduced stricter aviation safety rules limiting the number of power banks passengers can carry on flights departing from the country. Starting April 15, 2026, travellers may bring up to two power banks per person, regardless of battery capacity.
The decision follows updated international aviation safety guidance issued after several incidents worldwide involving lithium-battery overheating and onboard fire risks. Authorities highlighted that power banks contain lithium-ion batteries, which can potentially short-circuit or ignite if damaged or improperly handled during flights.
Under the new regulations, passengers carrying more than two power banks must dispose of the extra devices before boarding. Even newly purchased power banks from airport shops count toward the limit.
Power banks with capacities up to 100Wh remain permitted without prior airline authorisation, while devices rated between 100Wh and 160Wh require such authorisation. Any power bank exceeding 160Wh is strictly prohibited on aircraft.
Major carriers, including Singapore Airlines and Scoot, had already restricted the use and charging of power banks during flights, reinforcing safety precautions. The updated policy aims to minimise fire hazards and enhance onboard passenger safety as global air travel continues to grow.
