Switzerland Pitches ‘Silent Luxury’ To India’s Affluent Travellers

Switzerland Pitches ‘Silent Luxury’ To India’s Affluent Travellers

Switzerland is reshaping its luxury tourism strategy for India, moving away from conventional ideas of glamour and spectacle and instead promoting privacy, authenticity, nature and meaningful experiences.

According to Simon Bosshart, Chief Markets Officer East at Switzerland Tourism, the global tourism industry is increasingly moving from traditional destination promotion towards experience-led storytelling. Travellers are no longer satisfied with simply visiting famous landmarks; they want personalised journeys that align with their interests, lifestyles and aspirations.

India emerges as a key market

India has become an increasingly important long-haul market for Switzerland and is now among the country's top 10 international tourism source markets. It is also among the top three markets for the Swiss Travel System.

Bosshart said the changing Indian traveller is not only influencing visitor numbers but also the quality of tourism demand. Affluent Indian travellers are increasingly interested in longer stays, slower travel, and spending more on experiences.

For Switzerland Tourism, this shift represents a more sustainable growth opportunity, as higher-value visitors can contribute more to local economies while engaging more deeply with destinations and communities.

‘Silent Luxury’ becomes Switzerland’s new proposition

At the centre of Switzerland's new luxury strategy is its “Swiss Silent Luxury” initiative, introduced across the Asia-Pacific region at ILTM Singapore.

The concept reflects a growing preference among affluent travellers for understated luxury rather than conspicuous consumption. Switzerland is positioning itself as a destination where luxury is associated with tranquillity, discretion, authenticity and a close connection with nature.

Rather than competing with destinations known for extravagant experiences, Switzerland is highlighting the quality of everyday life—from reliable public transportation and precision to craftsmanship, cleanliness and thoughtful design.

The country's luxury proposition is therefore less about showing off and more about creating space for travellers to slow down, recharge and reconnect with their surroundings.

A more targeted approach to luxury marketing

Switzerland Tourism is also changing the way it communicates with high-end travellers. Instead of relying heavily on mass advertising or celebrity-led campaigns, the organisation is focusing on travel advisors, luxury specialists, selected creators and carefully curated experiences.

The strategy is based on the idea that exclusivity can be diluted when luxury is marketed indiscriminately to mass audiences.

Personal recommendations, specialist travel networks and bespoke itineraries are becoming increasingly important in influencing affluent travellers, particularly as luxury tourism becomes more personalised.

Sustainability at the heart of the strategy

Switzerland Tourism also sees sustainability as more than a promotional message. Bosshart described it primarily as an infrastructure issue that needs to be addressed within the tourism ecosystem itself.

This approach is reflected in the Swisstainable programme, which encourages tourism businesses and destinations to incorporate sustainable practices into their operations.

The strategy encourages travellers to stay longer, explore local communities, experience regional culture and products, and make more responsible travel choices.

AI and personalisation to shape destination marketing

Looking ahead, Switzerland Tourism expects destination marketing to become increasingly focused on specific traveller communities rather than broad demographic groups.

Artificial intelligence, creator-led discovery and personalised travel planning are expected to play a growing role in helping travellers find destinations and experiences suited to their individual preferences.

However, Bosshart believes technology will not replace the importance of storytelling. While AI can simplify trip planning and digital platforms can influence discovery, compelling stories will continue to shape travellers’ decisions.

For Switzerland, that story is evolving beyond its famous mountains and rail journeys. The country increasingly wants to be recognised for a slower pace of travel and a quieter form of luxury, where a holiday's value comes from how deeply travellers experience a destination rather than how much they consume.

As luxury tourism evolves, Switzerland is betting that understated experiences, authenticity and tranquillity can be just as compelling as traditional glamour and spectacle.
