The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has rejected recent media claims that the Indian government is preparing a financial scheme to subsidize airlines for reviving dormant or under-utilised airports. The bureau’s Fact-Check unit described the report as “fake, baseless and factually incorrect,” stating that no such proposal is under consideration.
The disputed report had suggested that under the proposed plan airlines would receive monthly incentives to operate flights to these silent airports — often referred to as “ghost airports.” The idea was to revive airports built under earlier aviation-connectivity initiatives that have seen little to no activity due to low demand.
By rejecting the claims, PIB has clarified that the existing regional connectivity scheme, UDAN, remains the only government-backed mechanism for supporting regional air travel, and it does not include any fresh subsidy plan targeted at dormant airports.
The clarification comes amid widespread media and social-media circulation of the subsidy report. Government officials have urged stakeholders and citizens to rely only on verified sources to avoid confusion.
