India’s Intercity Bus Travel Sees 79% Occupancy In 2025

A recent report by Sciative Solutions shows that India’s intercity bus travel sector performed strongly in 2025. The industry recorded an average occupancy of 79 % per trip, meaning nearly eight out of ten seats on major routes were filled. This reflects steady demand and a growing preference for more comfortable and premium travel options.

The data covers 50 major bus routes across North, South, East, West and Central India. It shows that intercity buses are not just recovering from earlier slowdowns but are now entering a phase of value-driven growth. One reason is that longer routes and premium seating options are increasingly popular with passengers who value comfort and reliability.

The revenue number shows stronger performance indicated with premium seat prices approaching ₹4,700 and an average revenue per journey of about ₹40,892, indicating travelers' readiness to pay more for improved onboard services.

Regional patterns differ: Due to active business routes and midnight services, South and West India had the highest occupancy, at over 84%. Due to the high demand for premium tickets, East India achieved high revenue per trip while having slightly lower occupancy (around 72%). Due to pilgrimage and commercial travel, North India maintained a high utilization rate of over 81%, while Central India registered about 74%.

Experts say this trend reflects a broader change in how Indians travel by bus.  Demand is no longer limited to festival seasons and now continues throughout the year, especially from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Travellers from these areas are increasingly choosing comfortable and high-quality bus services. Industry experts expect the intercity bus sector to keep growing in 2026 and beyond, supported by a focus on premium services, longer routes, and smart pricing strategies.
