The Karnataka government has introduced mandatory registration for all homestays operating across the state under the newly implemented Karnataka Homestay Registration Guidelines–2025. The initiative aims to bring greater transparency, improve accommodation standards, and strengthen tourist confidence in the state's growing homestay sector.
Bengaluru: According to the Department of Tourism, more than 500 homestay operators have already submitted registration applications following the rollout of the new guidelines. Tourism officials have urged all remaining eligible property owners to complete the registration process at the earliest to comply with the new regulations.
Tourism and Energy Minister K. J. George said the positive response from homestay owners reflects strong support for the government's efforts to create a more organised and reliable accommodation network. The new framework is expected to enhance visitor trust while promoting responsible tourism across Karnataka.
As part of the approval process, nearly 400 applications have already completed document verification, while on-site inspections are currently underway. Inspection teams comprising officials from the Tourism Department, Police Department, Deputy Commissioner's office, and local authorities will assess properties based on infrastructure, cleanliness, hygiene, safety measures, and operational standards before granting approval.
Homestays that do not meet the prescribed standards will not receive registration initially. However, owners will have the opportunity to address deficiencies and reapply after making the necessary improvements. Registration certificates will be issued within 45 days of successful verification and will remain valid for five years, after which renewal will be mandatory.
The state government believes that mandatory registration will help establish an authenticated database of licensed homestays while ensuring consistent quality and safety standards for travellers. Registered establishments will also be required to follow all operational and safety protocols laid down by the Tourism Department, contributing to a more regulated and sustainable tourism ecosystem in Karnataka.
