The hill district of Pithoragarh has inaugurated its first dedicated astro-tourism observatory in a bid to promote science-led and sustainable tourism while creating new livelihood opportunities for local communities.
The observatory was officially opened by Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, in the presence of senior district officials, including the District Magistrate and the Mayor.
Set up through a partnership between the District Tourism Department and Starscapes Experiences Pvt. Ltd., the facility will host stargazing sessions, night-sky observations and astronomy programmes for tourists, students and residents alike.
To run the observatory and guide visitors, local youth have been trained as Astro Guides — helping ensure that tourism benefits local people and builds scientific understanding in the region.
Officials said the project leverages Pithoragarh’s naturally dark skies and high altitude, making it an ideal spot for celestial viewing and positioning the district as a key astro-tourism destination in Uttarakhand.
Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj noted that the observatory is part of a long-term vision to expand astro-tourism across the state and strengthen related infrastructure to attract visitors and boost employment.
In addition to educating guests about astronomy, the new observatory seeks to promote ethical, locally driven tourism by fusing adventure travel with scientific literacy.
