Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau organised a series of tourism awareness sessions across major Indian cities to strengthen travel ties and promote the island nation as a preferred destination for Indian travellers.
The three-city programme was held in New Delhi (January 7), Mumbai (January 8) and Chennai (January 9). The initiative aimed to engage with India’s travel trade, tour operators and media while highlighting Sri Lanka’s readiness to welcome more international visitors.
Senior officials from the tourism and aviation industry of Sri Lanka attended the events. These officials included tourism board representatives as well as representatives from the airlines. The officials were also providing information on the readiness of the destination as well as the improved connectivity and accommodation facilities.
The sessions also highlighted the wide range of tourism offerings in Sri Lanka, including leisure travel, cultural tourism, wellness retreats, wildlife experiences, adventure activities, weddings and MICE tourism. Presentations and discussions focused on strengthening partnerships with Indian travel agents and tour operators to increase visitor numbers.
An interactive question-and-answer session allowed travel industry professionals and media representatives to address queries directly with the Sri Lankan delegation, helping build confidence in the destination and encouraging stronger business collaboration.
India remains the largest source market for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. In 2025, the country welcomed over 2.36 million international tourists, with more than 531,000 from India, accounting for about 22.3 per cent of total arrivals.
Officials said the awareness programme forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen engagement with the Indian travel market and drive sustained growth in visitor arrivals. By expanding collaboration with travel trade partners and improving connectivity, Sri Lanka aims further to position itself as a year-round destination for Indian travellers.
