India Helps Its Citizens Exit Iran Via Armenia And Azerbaijan, MEA Says

India actively assisted approximately 9,000 citizens in Iran, including students and seafarers, in returning home. The government facilitated their departure via land routes to Azerbaijan and Armenia by providing visa support and border-crossing assistance. Some Indians have already returned, while others have been relocated to safer locations within Iran.

India continues to help its citizens in Iran leave the country via land routes to Azerbaijan and Armenia, then take commercial flights home, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday. The government is providing visa support and facilitating border crossings for Indians who want to travel through these neighbouring countries. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is in contact with its citizens in Iran and is assisting those who wish to depart via available routes.

“We are also assisting Indian nationals who wish to travel to Azerbaijan and Armenia and from there to take commercial flights to return home. We are assisting them with visas. We are also assisting them with the border crossings,” Jaiswal said.

 Around 9000 Indians in Iran

According to the MEA, around 9000 Indian nationals are currently in Iran. This group includes students, seafarers, business people, professionals, and pilgrims. Jaiswal said several Indians have already left the country and returned home. “We have had about 9000 Indian nationals who were there or who are there in Iran. These 9000 Indian nationals comprise students, seafarers, business people, professionals and some pilgrims,” he said.

 Some moved to safer locations

The MEA said some Indians, including students and pilgrims based in Tehran, have been moved to other cities within Iran as a precaution. Officials are also supporting those who plan to leave through neighbouring countries.

“Several Indian antionas mostly stufnets left the country and reached home. We have shifted several Indian antioansl, including students and pilgrims who were based in Tehran, to other safer locations and cities in the country,” Jaiswal said.

He added that Indian authorities have helped several citizens cross land borders and continue their journey back to India.

“We have had several Indian nationals who have approached us, and we have helped them to cross over into Azerbaijan and Armenia and from there to take commercial flights back home,” he said.

 Advisory for Indians in Iran

The MEA also advised Indians planning to leave Iran via land borders to follow the guidance issued by the Indian embassy. “I would take this opportunity to advise all Indian nationals who desire to leave Iran via land borders. They should adhere to the advisory that our embassy has issued,” Jaiswal said.
