The forest department in Kudremukh Wildlife Division has put a temporary ban on trekking activities in various forest areas to avoid the risk of forest fires during the dry season.
The restriction has been put on trekking activities in popular trekking areas in Kudremukh National Park, Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, and Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. Authorities said the move is a precautionary step to protect sensitive ecosystems, wildlife habitats and visitor safety.
The ban came into effect in mid-January 2026 and will remain in place until further notice. Officials have strictly prohibited entry into all notified trekking routes, including well-known trails such as Kudremukh Peak, Netravathi trek and Narasimha Parvatha.
Forest officials explained that dry weather conditions increase the chances of accidental or human-induced fires, especially due to trekking activities. Limiting human movement in these areas is expected to significantly reduce such risks.
To enforce the restriction, authorities have deployed additional staff, installed warning signs and increased patrolling and surveillance across forest zones. Strict action has been warned against anyone violating the ban.
The move is part of a larger attempt to tighten fire prevention measures in ecologically vulnerable areas of the Western Ghats, especially during peak fire season. Officials have appealed to tourists and trekkers to cooperate with this by not entering restricted areas.
The temporary ban highlights the growing focus on sustainable tourism and environmental protection, ensuring that fragile forest regions are safeguarded from preventable damage.
