India witnessed robust growth in inbound tourism in 2024, with international tourist arrivals (ITAs) reaching 2.06 crore, marking a 56.93 per cent increase compared to 1.31 crore arrivals recorded in 2014, according to figures presented by the Ministry of Tourism in Parliament.
New Delhi: Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a written response in the Lok Sabha, said the data reflects the steady expansion of India's tourism sector over the past decade. The ministry compiles international arrival figures using data from the Bureau of Immigration (BoI), while domestic tourism statistics are sourced from states and Union Territories.
The government also highlighted a remarkable rise in domestic tourism. Domestic tourist visits (DTVs) increased from 128.28 crore in 2014 to 294.53 crore in 2024, registering an impressive 129.60 per cent growth. The figures underline the growing popularity of leisure, pilgrimage, heritage, and business travel across the country.
According to the ministry, the consistent increase in both international and domestic travel reflects the impact of ongoing investments in tourism infrastructure, improved connectivity, destination development, and promotional campaigns aimed at positioning India as a preferred global travel destination. Government initiatives have also focused on enhancing visitor experiences, preserving cultural heritage, and expanding tourism facilities in key destinations.
The latest tourism statistics indicate that India's travel industry continues to gain momentum, supported by stronger demand and policy-driven development. The government reaffirmed its commitment to working with state governments and industry stakeholders to further strengthen the tourism ecosystem and attract higher visitor numbers in the coming years.
