Antara Cruises To Invest ₹500 Crore To Strengthen Luxury River Tourism In Assam

Antara Cruises has announced plans to invest more than ₹500 crore over the next five years to expand luxury river cruising in Assam, reinforcing its commitment to making the Brahmaputra a leading destination for premium inland cruise tourism in India.

New Delhi: The investment will support the development of new luxury river vessels, tourism infrastructure, and destination experiences across the state. The expansion is expected to strengthen Assam's position as a major river cruise hub while creating new opportunities for tourism, hospitality, and local communities.

The announcement follows discussions between Raj Singh, Founder and Managing Director of Antara Cruises, and Ravi Kota, Chief Secretary of Assam, regarding the company's long-term vision for developing the state's river tourism ecosystem. The focus is on creating world-class infrastructure and enhancing the overall visitor experience along the Brahmaputra.

According to the company, the investment will primarily be directed towards introducing new luxury cruise vessels specially designed for the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. The first vessel is expected to begin operations in 2027, with additional ships planned as part of the phased expansion.

Antara Cruises has highlighted the importance of strong collaboration with both the central and Assam governments to improve cruise-related infrastructure. Key requirements include modern jetties, embarkation terminals, road connectivity, shore facilities, visitor services, and destination management to deliver seamless luxury travel experiences.

The company has also expressed its willingness to invest in supporting infrastructure wherever necessary, provided suitable land and administrative support are available. This collaborative approach aims to build a globally competitive river cruise ecosystem without relying on direct financial incentives from the government.

The proposed investment comes as India's inland cruise sector continues to witness significant growth, supported by government initiatives to expand river cruise circuits across the country. Assam's rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and the scenic Brahmaputra River position the state as one of India's most promising destinations for luxury river tourism.

Industry experts believe the project could generate employment, encourage investment in hospitality and tourism infrastructure, and attract high-value domestic and international travellers. By strengthening cruise connectivity and premium tourism offerings, Antara Cruises aims to transform Assam into a flagship destination for luxury river cruising in the Northeast.

With this ambitious expansion, Antara Cruises is set to play a key role in shaping the future of India's river cruise industry while showcasing the tourism potential of the Brahmaputra on the global stage.
