With the goal of giving commuters access to reasonably priced, surge-free transportation options and enabling drivers to keep all of their profits, the Delhi government plans to launch the city's first cooperative ride-hailing service. This program is a part of the government's larger endeavor to revive the city's cooperative movement and aims to provide an alternative to the corporate platforms already in place.
The proposed service will operate through a dedicated mobile application that directly connects passengers with driver-members of the cooperative. This concept, in contrast to conventional ride-hailing services, does away with the necessity for corporate middlemen, enabling drivers to run the platform independently and retain all of their profits.
Taxis, autorickshaws, and two-wheelers will all be available through the app under a unified system, and users will be able to share earnings and take part in decision-making.
Cooperative Minister Ravinder Indraj made the announcement during the Delhi Citizen Cooperative Bank's annual general meeting, describing the initiative as part of the government's larger effort to "revitalize the cooperative movement in the city with new direction and energy."
He said that the service aims to improve taxi drivers' income, working conditions, and overall quality of life. The government intends to create a sustainable model that benefits drivers and consumers by enlisting drivers as stakeholders and active participants.
The Delhi government's cooperative ride-hailing service draws inspiration from the "Sahkar Taxi" cooperative currently being developed in Maharashtra and other states, a concept championed by the Union Ministry of Cooperation. The Sahkar Taxi initiative aims to register two-wheelers, taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheelers under a single umbrella, with profits shared equitably among driver-members, bypassing corporate intermediaries.
The Delhi government's initiative is expected to provide commuters with reliable service, transparent fares, and no unexpected price surges. The cooperative model aims to create a fairer and more sustainable urban transportation system.
