Indian Aviation To Operate Youngest Fleet, Cut Emissions By 2028

Indian aviation is poised to operate the youngest global fleet by 2028, significantly reducing emissions. Industry leaders at the India Travel and Tourism Sustainability Conference 2025 highlighted the rapid shift towards new-generation aircraft: this transition and a broader focus on sustainability position India as a leader in environmentally conscious aviation.

Indian carriers will be flying the youngest fleet in the world in the next five years and become the least emitters from being the third largest emitter now, top aviation industry leaders said on Wednesday. Participating in a discussion at the India Travel and Tourism Sustainability Conclave 2025, Akasa Air Co-Founder Aditya Ghosh said. 'Five years from now, I feel that when you compare Indian aviation to the rest of the world, we will be flying the youngest feet in the sky, which means by math that we will be emitting the least.'

He said, "If you look at aircraft orders and what people will be flying, you know that 2000 days from now, we will as a country be flying the youngest fleet in the world."

While India is the third largest aviation market in the world, Ghosh said, "We are also the third largest emitter. Today, aviation contributes 1 per cent of emissions in India, which is less than the global average." He, however, said that emissions will also grow faster as the country's aviation sector grows. Spice Jet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said, 'India is going to be right at the forefront of being one of the lowest emitters in the world in the aviation sector.'

Aviation is going to be one of the most exciting areas in the Indian economy; there is no doubt. There will be rapid growth, and more and more people will fly in different flight modes, not just aircraft.

Expressing similar views, Air India Express Manager Aloke Singh said that before the merger of Air Asia India and Air India Express in FY23, just 10 per cent of the fleet was new generation.

'We closed the last financial year with 50:50-  50 per cent new and 50 per cent old. Next year, two-thirds will be new gen. So that is rapidly moving,' he said. However, he added that sustainability is way wider than just fuel, including positivity impacting society and embracing the circular economy, among other things and being a part of the Tata Group, where sustainability is viewed with a much broader lens.
