Bihar: A citizen-led forum has submitted a series of recommendations to the Bihar government to strengthen the global appeal of Gaya and Bodh Gaya, with a focus on attracting more international tourists and Buddhist pilgrims.
The Bodh Gaya Citizen Forum (BGCF) has urged authorities to adopt a long-term tourism development strategy that enhances the region's spiritual, cultural, and medical tourism potential. The proposals seek to improve visitor experiences while showcasing the area's rich Buddhist heritage to a wider international audience.
Among the key suggestions is the expansion of the Mahabodhi Mahavihara precinct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by developing available government land to the north of the temple complex. The forum believes this would help accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims and visitors while improving the overall tourism infrastructure.
The forum has also proposed creating a "Seven Places of Buddha" attraction that narrates the major milestones of Buddha's life through themed installations. In addition, it recommends building replicas of renowned Buddhist monuments from around the world to provide international visitors with a comprehensive cultural and spiritual experience at a single destination.
Recognising the historical significance of Dungeshwari Hills, where Buddha is believed to have spent years in meditation before attaining enlightenment, the group has suggested installing a large statue depicting Buddha during his ascetic period. The initiative is intended to further strengthen the site's religious and historical importance for pilgrims.
Beyond spiritual tourism, the forum has highlighted the opportunity to develop medical tourism in Bodh Gaya by establishing an international-standard Buddhist Medical College and Hospital. According to the proposal, combining healthcare with pilgrimage tourism could attract visitors from Buddhist-majority countries seeking both spiritual and wellness experiences.
The recommendations come as Bihar continues to invest in tourism infrastructure through various government initiatives, with Bodh Gaya already identified as a priority destination under national tourism development programmes. Improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and enhanced visitor facilities are expected to play a crucial role in increasing international tourist arrivals and strengthening the region's position as a leading spiritual tourism hub.
