Emirates has completed the refurbishment of its 100th aircraft under its ambitious USD 5 billion fleet modernisation programme, marking a significant milestone in one of the aviation industry's largest cabin upgrade projects. The initiative is part of the airline's long-term strategy to enhance passenger comfort and deliver a more consistent onboard experience across its fleet.
Dubai: Since the programme began in November 2022, Emirates has retrofitted 47 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777 aircraft at its engineering facilities in Dubai. The airline plans to upgrade around 20 additional aircraft by the end of 2026, taking the project beyond the halfway point of its expanded 219-aircraft refurbishment programme.
The large-scale retrofit has involved more than 400 engineers and technicians, who have collectively spent approximately 4.4 million man-hours transforming the aircraft interiors. Every refurbished aircraft has undergone a complete cabin refresh, including the installation of Emirates' Premium Economy cabin, updated seating, redesigned interiors, and enhanced passenger amenities. More than 3,800 Premium Economy seats have already been introduced across the upgraded fleet.
According to Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, the milestone reflects the airline's continued investment in delivering a premium travel experience across every cabin class. He also highlighted the technical expertise of the Emirates Engineering team, which has successfully executed the complex refurbishment programme entirely in-house while maintaining aircraft availability and operational schedules.
The refurbishment process involves dismantling existing cabin interiors, installing thousands of new components, and reassembling each aircraft with upgraded products and finishes. Emirates has collaborated with more than 100 suppliers worldwide to support the programme.
Beyond enhancing the passenger experience, the airline is also incorporating sustainability into the project by repurposing materials removed during the retrofits. Through its "Aircrafted by Emirates" initiative, retired cabin materials are transformed into lifestyle products, while recycled seat fabrics have been used to produce thousands of backpacks for children across multiple countries.
With the retrofit programme progressing steadily, Emirates continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in premium air travel while extending the lifespan and appeal of its wide-body fleet.
