The Sissu village of Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul Spiti district has temporarily barred tourists from entering their region, local officials said. The decision has been made to preserve the village's spiritual and cultural traditions due to the growing number of tourists.
Villagers and community leaders have long been concerned that unregulated tourism is affecting their religious customs, local lifestyle, and heritage, especially near sacred sites and monasteries that are central to Sissu’s culture. Residents say that traffic, noise, and crowded streets are making it harder to maintain traditional practices and the peaceful way of life they value.
Under the temporary ban, tourists will not be allowed to enter or stay in Sissu until further notice. Officials said this step is meant to give the community time to develop rules and infrastructure to better manage visitors in the future, without harming local culture or the environment.
Local leaders have also expressed plans to introduce community-based tourism guidelines, which may include limits on daily visitor numbers, guidelines for respectful behaviour around sacred areas, and support for local businesses so that tourism — when it resumes — benefits residents more directly.
The move in Sissu reflects a growing trend in fragile mountain and cultural destinations where residents seek to balance tourism development with cultural preservation and environmental protection.
