Sikkim Requires Online Permits For Foreign Tourists

Tourism Update- Sikkim Requires Online Permits For Foreign Tourists

According to reports, the Sikkim government has introduced a new regulation requiring all foreign tourists to apply for online entry permits before entering the state. This is aimed at improving the security and tracking of foreign tourists.

Under the new system, foreign travellers must apply for and receive an electronic permit through an online portal before arriving in Sikkim. The government says this will help authorities track visitor movement, verify traveller details and respond quickly if any security concerns arise.

This is in reaction to the increasing need for border security in the region, which has mountainous terrain and sensitive borders with China and Bhutan. It was stated that the new permit system would not affect the travel process in any way.

Foreign tourists who apply online will need to submit passport details, itinerary information and passport photos as part of the permit request. Once approved, the electronic permit will be issued and must be shown along with identification at immigration checkpoints and during travel within the state.

Sikkim’s tourism department said the new rule is aimed at balancing visitor convenience with safety needs, ensuring that tourism continues while reinforcing monitoring procedures. Domestic tourists are not affected by this change.

Officials added that the online permit system will be rolled out in phases, with support available to help travellers complete the application process easily. The government says the system will make tracking tourism patterns more efficient and help enhance traveller safety across the state.
