Thailand, Italy And The UAE Lead As Indian Couples Take Weddings Global

Published on : Mon, Feb 16, 2026

Destination Weddings For Indian Couples- Thailand, Italy, UAE Lead The Choice
Policybazzar's 2023-2025 YTD data shows a 27.4% year-on-year rise in travel insurance purchases, alongside international weddings, highlighting how Indian couples and families are increasingly planning global celebrations. Thailand, the UAE, and Italy lead as preferred destinations, while medical and baggage covers dominate buyer preferences among multi-generational travellers.

Indian weddings are going global, and so is their insurance coverage. According to Policybazaar's latest Travel Insurance Data Report 2023-2025, YTD travel insurance linked to destination weddings has grown 27.4 per cent year on year for two consecutive years, signalling a major behavioural shift among Indian couples and families embracing international wedding celebrations. The surge reflects the expanding scale and complexity of global weddings from beachfront ceremonies in Thaialnd ot vineyard vows in Italy and growing awareness of the financial and logistical risks associated with multi-day high spend events abroad.

Top destinations for Indian weddings abroad include Thailand, the UAE, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka, while Italy, Spain, and Greece attract smaller, luxury-oriented groups. Oman and the Maldives remain favoured for intimate, family-centric weddings. Travel insurance demand spikes sharply around India's key wedding seasons, January, March, July, August and November to December, with the steepest increase of 30 per cent year on year recorded during the winter wedding window, reinforcing how insurance partners now mirror wedding calendars rather than leisure travel peaks.

The data also underscores strong multi-generational participation with buyers split among brides, grooms, parents and senior travellers. The mix has driven higher uptake of medical and existing disease coverage, as well as protection for high-value baggage and jewellery. Couples themselves purchase most policies, while 30 per cent come from family members and 10 per cent from NRI relatives, showing the incredibly collaborative nature of wedding travel planning.

Urban India remains the demand hub with Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi leading, followed by Hyderabad and Chennai. Tier 2 cities such as Pune, Gurugram, Noida, Jaipur and Ludhiana are emerging strongly, indicating wider access to international celebrations. After a post-pandemic dip, group and family bookings have rebounded by 28 per cent in 2025, reflecting renewed confidence in large-scale overseas weddings. Travellers continue to prefer a USD 250,000 sum insured across destinations, maintaining consistent coverage even for shorter trips. In terms of coverage, prioritise most for baggage loss, medical emergencies, PED cover, trip cancellations, and flight delays.

Commenting on the findings, Meet Kapadia, Head of Travel Insurance at Policybazaar, said: "Destination weddings have become a famous choice for Indian families, and our data clearly shows how travel insurance planning is evolving alongside this shift. The rise in insurance adoption around wedding season is driven by multi-generational travel, longer stays and high financial stakes. Today's wedding travellers are treating travel insurance as an essential part of their wedding planning, prioritising comprehensive medical and baggage protection with higher sum insured levels."

The report highlights a clear evolution in how Indian travellers perceive risk management in wedding tourism, placing travel insurance at the heart of destination wedding planning as global celebrations continue to scale up.
