State tourism ministers and senior officials gathered in Udaipur for a two-day conference where they presented proposals to develop one globally benchmarked tourism destination in each state and union territory.
The project, announced under the Union Budget 2025-2026, aims to create 50 world-class tourism destinations through a competitive “challenge mode.” In this model, destinations will compete for government funding based on factors such as accessibility, infrastructure readiness, and development potential.
The Union Minister of Tourism emphasised throughout the occasion that tourism should be seen as a means of conserving India's natural, historical, and cultural heritage in addition to being an economic engine. The government would fund infrastructure and essential services, emphasising the promotion of public-private partnerships.
With the support of thorough presentations on infrastructure and connections, Rajasthan, for example, suggested places like Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Bharatpur as possible international tourism destinations.
A new "Digital and Green (DG) Tourism Policy," which aims to provide a single national framework to support sustainable and inclusive tourist growth across all states and union territories, is also being introduced as part of the development plan.
