The decision follows a marked increase in incidents, linked to lithium batteries across the aviation sector, driven by a rise in passenger usage of portable chargers. Many basic power banks lack advanced overcharge protection systems, heightening the risk of thermal runaway. This dangerous, self-sustaining overheating process can cause fires, explosions and the release of toxic gases.
Emirates will prohibit the use of any power bank onboard its flights from 1 October 2025, following a comprehensive safety review aimed at reducing lithium battery-related risks in aviation. While customers will still be permitted to carry one power bank onboard under specific conditions, the devices may no longer be used to charge personal electronics during the flight, nor be charged themselves utilising the aircraft’s power supply.
Under the new rules-
- Only one power bank under 100 Watt Hours is allowed per passenger.
- Charging a power bank using the aircraft’s power supply is prohibited.
- All accepted power banks must have visible capacity ratings.
- Power banks cannot be stored in overhead bins and must be placed in the seat pocket or a bag under the seat.
- Power banks remain prohibited in checked luggage.

Emirates said the policy would significantly reduce risks by ensuring all power banks remain in accessible locations, enabling cabin crew to respond swiftly in the rare event of an onboard battery fire.
