Kerala's Idukki district administration has said that it will take action against adventure tourism businesses that do not have the necessary licenses. The action was taken in response to a recent safety issue that sparked grave worries about uncontrolled activity.
District Collector Dinesan Cheruvat said the decision came after a family of four — including two children — was left stranded about 150 feet above ground in a sky-dining restaurant in Anachal, when the crane supporting the platform malfunctioned. The family was later rescued by fire and rescue teams.
Authorities have already registered a case against the operators of the sky-dining restaurant for endangering public safety and operating without a proper licence. A stop memo has also been issued to the restaurant after officials found it lacked approval from the civic body.
Cheruvat said such adventure tourism ventures must obtain clearances from multiple departments, including the Revenue department, fire and rescue services, electrical wing and local panchayat, before opening to the public. He noted the sky dining facility had not furnished the required documents.
Looking ahead, the collector said that once local body elections are over, the administration will compile a district-wide list of adventure tourism units in every panchayat area. Any establishment found to be operating without all required permissions will be shut down or barred from functioning.
The move reflects a growing emphasis on tourist safety in Idukki’s adventure tourism sector. Authorities are strengthening regulatory compliance to prevent risks posed by unlicensed and potentially unsafe operations.
