India's spiritual tourism sector is witnessing a remarkable transformation, with Generation Z emerging as the leading force behind faith-based travel. According to the latest data released by redBus, young travellers now account for more than 53% of bookings to spiritual destinations across the country during FY26.
The findings highlight a growing interest among younger Indians in exploring pilgrimage sites, religious landmarks, and culturally significant destinations. Traditionally associated with older generations, spiritual travel is increasingly attracting Gen Z travellers seeking personal growth, cultural experiences, and meaningful journeys.
Popular spiritual routes experiencing strong demand include Bengaluru–Tirupati, Hyderabad–Tirupati, Chennai–Thanjavur, Pune–Nanded, Indore–Ujjain, and Rishikesh–Delhi. Among these, the Bengaluru–Tirupati corridor has emerged as one of the most preferred routes for young travellers.
The report also reveals a significant shift in booking behaviour. Last-minute travel planning has become increasingly common, with bookings made within four hours of departure rising from 16% in 2022 to 23% in 2026. This trend reflects Gen Z's preference for flexibility, spontaneous decision-making, and mobile-first travel planning.
By gender, male travellers account for approximately 69% of spiritual travel bookings among young passengers, while female travellers account for around 31%.
Industry experts believe that digital platforms, social media content, travel influencers, devotional music, and destination-based storytelling are helping younger audiences discover and connect with spiritual destinations. While technology is simplifying trip planning, the core motivations behind these journeys remain rooted in faith, cultural heritage, family traditions, and personal reflection.
The growth of spiritual tourism among younger generations aligns with broader industry trends. Recent reports indicate that spiritual and pilgrimage tourism continues to play a significant role in India's domestic travel economy, contributing substantially to overall tourism activity.
As Gen Z travellers increasingly seek experiences that combine purpose, culture, and self-discovery, spiritual tourism is expected to remain one of the fastest-growing segments of India's travel industry in the coming years.
