India has emerged as the leading destination in Asia for spiritual travel demand in 2026, according to the latest Travel Outlook Report released by Agoda. The report reveals that nearly 19% of Indian travellers are planning journeys motivated by faith, spirituality, and cultural traditions, placing the country ahead of regional markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, and Thailand.
The growing interest in spiritually inspired travel reflects the deep-rooted connection between religion, culture, and tourism in India. Large-scale religious gatherings and festivals continue to drive travel decisions, encouraging both domestic and international visitors to explore sacred destinations.
One of the strongest contributors to this trend was the return of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, which recorded a remarkable 233% surge in accommodation searches. Festival-based travel also saw significant momentum during celebrations like Holi, with popular spiritual destinations witnessing sharp increases in visitor interest. Pushkar experienced a 195% rise in searches, followed by Vrindavan at 126% and Mathura at 109%.
Industry experts note that spiritual tourism is evolving beyond pilgrimage travel, blending cultural exploration, heritage experiences, and meaningful journeys. The report highlights significant opportunities for destinations to enhance visitor experiences by improving digital infrastructure, providing real-time travel information, and implementing seamless booking systems.
With millions of accommodation options, flight routes, and travel activities available globally, digital travel platforms are playing a vital role in simplifying trip planning for spiritually motivated travellers. As faith-driven travel continues to grow, India is expected to remain a dominant force shaping Asia’s spiritual tourism landscape in the coming years.
