Indian Railways recorded significant progress in 2025 by expanding its network into some of the country’s most challenging terrains, improving safety, and stepping up modernisation efforts as part of its year-end review, officials said.
The rail network achieved several landmark milestones, including the commissioning of remote and challenging routes, such as the Pamban vertical-lift bridge in Tamil Nadu and the world’s highest rail bridge over the Chenab River, providing reliable rail access to Kashmir. Connectivity also reached Mizoram with the opening of the Bairabi–Sairang line, linking remote northeast regions with the national grid.
In 2025, the Ministry of Railways launched 42 major infrastructure projects worth more than ₹25,000 crore. The railways commissioned over 900 km of new tracks and upgraded existing lines to improve speeds and safety. Nearly 99.2% of the broad gauge network has been electrified, bringing the country closer to complete electrification of rail routes.
The network also expanded key passenger services, adding 13 new Amrit Bharat trains to bring the total to 30, and launching two Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services in Gujarat and Bihar. Indian Railways operated a record 43,000 special trains in 2025 to manage heavy festival and peak travel demand.
Safety levels improved in 2025, with train accidents reducing to 11 by November, compared to 31 the year before. To further improve safety and smooth traffic movement, Indian Railways built 1,161 road-over and road-under bridges across the country.
The ministry also focused on passenger experience, rolling out the RailOne App as a unified platform for rail services and implementing Aadhaar-authenticated reservation reforms to streamline ticket bookings.
Freight operations received a boost with the commissioning of the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors, strengthening cargo capacity and efficiency.
Indian Railways’ 2025 performance reflects a concentrated effort to connect complex geographies, enhance safety and passenger services, and modernise infrastructure nationwide.
