The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, has urged a stronger focus on sustainable and responsible tourism across the Union Territory to safeguard its sensitive environment and ensure long-term benefits for local communities.
Gupta made the remarks during a visit to Sangam Point, one of Ladakh’s most famous natural attractions located near the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. He described Sangam Point as a major highlight of Ladakh tourism, drawing both domestic and international visitors thanks to its dramatic landscapes and adventure-tourism offerings such as river rafting, trekking, and sightseeing.
He said tourism plays an important role in Ladakh’s economy by creating jobs in areas like hospitality, transport, handicrafts and eco-tourism. He also says the need to follow eco-friendly tourism practices to protect Ladakh’s natural environment for future generations.
The administration plans to improve tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities. This includes viewing points and cafes designed to protect the natural environment. The Lt Governor also highlighted efforts to promote year-round tourism, including winter sports and cultural events, so the region benefits economically year-round rather than only during peak months.
Gupta pointed to ongoing and future projects that will boost connectivity and access — such as the Zoji La Tunnel — which is expected to provide all-weather road access between Ladakh and the rest of India once completed, boosting tourism especially during winter.
Throughout his visit, the Lt Governor called on officials, local stakeholders and tourists to support responsible travel initiatives that protect Ladakh’s unique natural beauty, cultural heritage and ecology, while also empowering local communities and strengthening livelihoods.
