IndiGo becomes India's first airline to induct Airbus A321XLR into its fleet, moving ahead in its overseas expansion strategy. From late January 2026, the aircraft will operate non-stop services between Delhi and Mumbai, and Athens. With the onboarding of the new Airbus, Indigo opens a long range of passenger-oriented comfort and fuel-efficient operations for the carrier.
India’s preferred airline, IndiGo, has achieved a milestone in its global expansion journey by introducing Airbus A321XLR into its fleet. The narrow-body and long-range aircraft touched down at Delhi’s Indra Gandhi International Airport. The aircraft will enable IndiGo to expand its global network with non-stop long-distance routes, maintaining its high operational efficiency.
The maiden A321XLR will be deployed on 23rd January 2026 from Mumbai to Athens. On 24th January 2026, the aircraft will take its first flight from New Delhi to Athens. Both routes will be covered thrice a week. The aircraft comes with high-performance flight operations like enhanced passenger comfort and fuel efficiency while covering a distance of 8,700 kilometres.
“IndiGo is honoured to be India’s first airline to welcome Airbus A321XLR into its fleet, marking an important milestone as we gear up to redefine long-haul travel for India. The advanced capabilities of this aircraft enable us to reach newer regions across the globe and further strengthen India’s position as a key player in international aviation. This reinforces our commitment to giving wings to the nation by connecting it to the world. We are happy to partner with Airbus and RECARO on this journey as we combine next-generation aircraft performance, thoughtfully-designed cabin environment and enhanced fuel efficiency to deliver a comfortable onboard experience, “said Pieter Elbers, CEO, IndiGo.
Out of the 40 pre-ordered aircraft, nine of them are expected to touchdown during CY 2026. Apart from Athens, the aeroplane plans to deploy on already existing routes like Istanbul and Denpasar (Bali), with upcoming expansions on routes to Europe and East Asia.
“The arrival of the first Airbus A321XLR marks a new milestone in our journey with IndiGo and a proud moment for the Indian aviation. We are honoured by the trust IndiGo places in Airbus, and we remain committed to supporting the airline as it continues to give wings to the nation’s aviation aspirations. By opening mid-to long-haul routes which were previously unreachable by single-aisle aircraft, this delivery catalyst for IndiGo’s international growth while significantly enhancing India’s global connectivity,” said Jurgen Westermeier, President & Managing Director, Airbus India and South Asia.
The Airbus A321XLR features a dual- class configuration with 183 Economy class seats and 12 IndiGoStretch. A new in-flight entertainment system, provided by BlueBox, facilitates passengers to stream films, games and shows directly on their devices. The RECARO-designed seating offers enhanced legroom, lumbar support, recline complimented by in-seat power, adjustable headrests and device holders. By default, vegetarian, complimentary hot meals, with pre-booking non-vegetarian options shall be made available alongside beverages for purchase in Economy and complimentary service for IndiGoStretch passengers.
