In order to improve the experience for guests, Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve has started a new astrotourism project that includes night sky activities and stargazing in addition to customary animal tours. This approach is part of efforts to offer more sustainable and low-impact tourism options that pair nature with the wonders of the cosmos.
The initiative — featured under a programme called Cosmic Kaziranga — held a two-day stargazing and astro-guide training camp early in January at Rhinoland Park in Burrapahar. The aim is to offer a combination of daytime wildlife activities like jeep safaris and bird watching with nighttime stargazing activities that can make use of the fact that the night skies in the region are relatively clear.
According to park officials, astro-tourism can help diversify the park’s offerings by providing visitors with a unique, eco-friendly experience that links wildlife appreciation with scientific and cultural interest in astronomy. The business model also provides job opportunities by training young people to act as guides and interpreters for nighttime sky viewing sessions.
Through the combination of stargazing and conservation-oriented tourism, Kaziranga hopes to provide memorable experiences for its visitors while also promoting environmental awareness. This move is part of the growing trend in sustainable tourism that focuses on education, minimal impact, and longer stays.
