The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has set out an ambitious agenda aimed at elevating India’s tourism profile globally. Announced during the two-day State Tourism Ministers’ Meet in Udaipur, the key initiative—dubbed “One State: One Global Destination”—seeks to develop at least one world- class tourist destination in every State and Union Territory.
Under the scheme, invited states present proposals detailing how their nominated destination can meet global benchmarks for infrastructure, visitor experience, sustainability and connectivity. A “challenge-mode” competitive framework will determine central funding and incentivize high standards through a Destination Maturity Model.
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Union Minister of Tourism, talked about the significance of "collaborative federalism." This means that effective collaboration between the federal government, the states, the corporate sector, and local communities is essential to realise this objective. By using this strategy, the ministry hopes to highlight India's vast diversity and establish its travel destinations as rivals on the international scene.
In parallel, the ministry is crafting a five-year action plan (2026-30) and country-specific marketing strategies to deepen international engagement and support the overall target of growing India’s tourism economy in line with its 2047 vision.
