This project intended to enhance the experience of travellers and visitors by establishing a more recognizable area.
Deira's recently developed tourist corridor has enhanced accessibility between the commercial and historic districts.
The Dubai Municipality has successfully concluded the Old Municipal Street project in Deira, which involved converting the area from a traditional road to a lively pedestrian tourism pathway with commercial activity.
The Old Municipal Street initiative, which stretches from the Al Ras neighbourhood of Deira to the renowned Gold Market, connects several historic markets that overlook the banks of Dubai Creek.
The Director General of Dubai Municipality, Dawoud Al Hajri, emphasized the critical strategic significance of the initial stage of the all-encompassing plan.
He elaborated that the Old Municipal Street project is an element of a larger scheme to revitalize the historic districts of Deira and Bur Dubai and numerous markets and heritage locations throughout the emirate.
Al Hajri stated, "We are striving to enhance the aesthetic appeal and livability of Dubai by providing integrated and aesthetically pleasing facilities, all the while safeguarding the historical architectural identity of the Emirate." The objective is to firmly establish Dubai as a leading international tourist destination that harmoniously combines modern appeal with historic cultural sites.
Complete renovation
The municipality implemented a thorough renovation as part of the project, which encompassed the construction of street pavement, the installation of a new gate, improvements to the lighting system, and the incorporation of historic features, including the renowned Al Mandus.
The thoroughfare has been decorated with traditional seating areas and umbrellas inspired by heritage to enhance comfort and maintain authenticity. This allows tourists to gain insight into the historic character of one of the most ancient locations in Dubai.
Al Hajri stated, "Our primary aim in rejuvenating the historic municipal street is to infuse Dubai's traditional markets and landmarks with renewed vitality while elevating the tourist experience via inventive methodologies."
The road was completely shut to vehicular traffic to ensure efficient operations while the municipality performed extensive pavement.
This endeavour aimed to enhance the experience of travellers and visitors by establishing a more recognizable landmark.
Its additional objective is to promote commercial activity to inspire investors to expand their enterprises per the street's revised identity. "Integrating recreational amenities and designing pedestrian-friendly spaces, as well as enhancing the area's aesthetic appeal with heritage-inspired elements that capture its distinct identity, are all components of this initiative." "Additionally, we intend to stimulate and activate the neighbouring markets to increase the region's appeal to tourists," he continued.
