The United Arab Emirates is set to begin the operation of passenger trains in 2026 with the launch of the UAE’s first national Etihad Rail passenger network. This new network will mark a major shift in the way people travel in the UAE, offering a fast and reliable alternative to road transport.
The new network will link 11 cities and regions, covering all seven emirates, and will improve connectivity between the main hubs of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. The first phase of the project will see the opening of train services between these points, with stations already planned in key locations.
Etihad Rail trains are expected to travel at speeds of up to 200 km/h, cutting travel times significantly. For example, the journey between Abu Dhabi and Dubai could take under an hour, while even longer routes like Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will be much quicker than by road.
The network is intended to be comfortable and modern, with passenger transport services integrated into overall transport solutions, including connections to local buses and metro networks, to ensure smooth first and last-mile connectivity for passengers.
Officials say the passenger rail will help reduce road congestion, support tourism and economic growth, and provide residents and visitors with a safer and more efficient way to travel between emirates.
