Etihad Airways and Hong Kong Airlines have announced an expanded partnership featuring a fresh codeshare agreement plus a reciprocal loyalty-program tie-up — a move aimed at simplifying travel between the Middle East, Greater China and parts of East Asia.
Under the new arrangement:
- Flights operated by Hong Kong Airlines between Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi will now carry Etihad’s “EY” flight code, making them bookable via Etihad’s booking channels.
- Conversely, travellers flying with Etihad can connect to several major Japanese cities — including Fukuoka, Sapporo, Osaka and Okinawa — on Hong Kong
- Airlines-operated flights under the “HX” code. Bookings under this partnership allow for a single-ticket journey, one check-in, and automatic baggage transfer across carriers — removing much of the hassle from multi-leg travel.
On the loyalty front, frequent-flyer programmes of both airlines — Etihad Guest and Hong Kong Airlines’ Fortune Wings Club — will now allow mutual earning and redemption of miles across the combined network. This gives travellers added value and flexibility when booking routes across participating airlines.
The expanded cooperation comes just as Etihad relaunched its direct Abu Dhabi–Hong Kong route in early November, marking a renewed focus on connectivity between the Gulf and Asia.
What it means for travellers and the industry:
- Easier and more seamless travel between the Middle East, Hong Kong, and Japan — especially useful for those combining business, leisure, or multi-country trips.
- Increased appeal for frequent travellers thanks to combined loyalty benefits and broader route options.
- Strengthened position for Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong as major aviation hubs, connecting Asia, the Gulf, and beyond with less friction.
The agreement highlights a growing trend among airlines that employ codeshare and loyalty linkages. The aim is to develop flexible, customer-friendly route networks and tap into expanding demand for global connectivity and seamless travel.
