Travel executives report that overstaying and absconding visitors inflict fines and penalties on travel agencies, prompting stricter regulations at Dubai Airports.
According to industry insiders, visiting visa holders inadvertently extend their stays beyond the permitted duration, causing financial and operational burdens for travel agencies. Instances of overstaying and absconding among visitors have compelled authorities to impose more stringent entry rules at Dubai Airports, leading to challenges for travel agencies.
Grace Periods Have Been Removed.
Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels, highlighted a prevalent misunderstanding regarding the visa grace period. He stated, "Many visitors mistakenly assume they have a 10-day grace period beyond their visa's expiration date. However, this grace period was eliminated last year, resulting in unintentional overstays. Despite our regular reminders, they often deny the absence of a grace period."
According to Libin Varghese from Rooh Travel and Tourism, financial difficulties often contribute to visitors' overstaying. Varghese added, "Some visitors encounter unexpected financial challenges, making it difficult for them to return home on time. Moreover, the allure of Dubai and the UAE's diverse attractions tempt visitors to extend their stay without considering the legal consequences."
Delayed Job Opportunities Lead to Absconding.
Firoz pointed out another common reason for visitors absconding: "Visitors attracted by Dubai's opportunities often apply for jobs and wait for interview calls, disregarding their visa status. They frequently overstay in hopes of securing employment, placing themselves in legal jeopardy."
Bilal Abbas shared his experience of unintentionally overstaying during a job hunt in Dubai. He recounted, "While visiting my relatives in Dubai, I learned of a job opening in a friend's company. Excitedly, I applied and received an interview call. However, I completely forgot about my visa expiry date, just three days before the second interview." Despite overstaying, Abbas managed to secure a job but had to pay fines upon exiting the country.
Absconding Fine to Cost Dh2,000.
Firoz emphasised the severe consequences for travel agents in such situations, stating, "When visitors fail to report to us after their visa expires, the travel agency responsible for their visa incurs significant fines and penalties." He highlighted that travel agencies face a fine of Dh2,500 for each absconding case and a reduction in their visa quota, impacting their operational efficiency.
Addressing the penalties faced by overstaying visitors, Firoz explained, "Absconding visitors can resolve their status by paying a minimum fine of Dh2,000, along with penalties for overstay and administrative and exit fees." He cautioned that these expenses could be burdensome for visitors and travel agencies, with the minimum fine potentially increasing to Dh5,000 when additional fees are factored in.
Adherence to Visa Terms is Important.
Travel agents urge visitors to understand the legal implications of overstaying their visas. Firoz reiterated, "While Dubai remains an appealing destination for visitors, travellers must adhere to visa regulations and avoid overstaying. Proper planning and compliance with visa regulations are essential to prevent legal complications and financial penalties.
