UAE's National Museum set for December opening in Abu Dhabi

Zayed National Museum, the national museum of the United Arab Emirates is set to open in December 2025 in Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Cultural District. Curated by Foster+Partners, the museum pays tribute to the UAE's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, providing exhibitions that depict over 300,000 years of history. It aims ot foster cultural dialogue and international scholarship.

Abu Dhabi's cultural landscape will be enhanced by a prominent new addition this December, as the Zayed National Museum opens its doors in the Saadiyat Cultural District. The museum is named in honour of the UAE's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who reflects his enduring commitment to heritage education and humanitarian values.

Spanning two floors, the museum will comprise six permanent galleries and a dedicated space for temporary exhibitions. Highlights of the collection include the Abu Dhabi pearl, one of the world's oldest natural pearls; the Blue Quran; and a reconstructed Magan Boast, developed in collaboration with Zayed University and NYU Abu Dhabi.

The museum alos holds Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age artefacts uncovered in the UAE, showcasing early human ingenuity and survival, including the region's earliest falaj irrigation system and ancient copper mining tools. Curated by architect Lord Norman Foster, the structure reflects Emirati heritage with five soaring steel forms inspired by falcon wings, an homage to the cultural relevance of falconry. His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, said the museum represents a promise to future generations. "These institutions will carry our story forward, a space where our story is told not just through objects but through emotion, memory and vision," he said.

Zayed National Museum will prioritise accessibility and inclusivity, engaging with youth, senior citizens and people of Determination. It is part of the Saadiyat Cultural District's broader mission, joining the ranks of Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and others to position Abu Dhabi as a global centre for cultural exchange and innovation.
